MED-EMIP's Online Energy Balance
An Energy balance is an essential tool to get an overview on the complete flow of energy in a country: from energy provision from domestic production and imports, through energy transformation to secondary products such as electricity and derived petroleum products, and the final energy supplied to the different consumer groups.
To summarize the “energy” in different energy sources they are all calculated to a common energy unit, e.g. tons of oil equivalents TOE, by their calorific value.
Whereas energy balances are published by national statistical offices and international organizations (IEA, Eurostat) in tabular form as figures, MED-EMIP provides an online-tool for facilitating their analysis and validation, in particular for the project’s partner countries:
- To improve the access to available energy balances.
- To provide instant analysis and comparison for energy data providers as well as for data users.
- To allow users to alter energy balance data and save as many scenarios as they need for their own use, and to enable sharing them with others.
- To provide the users with the ability to aggregate different balances in one set and review its reports and indicators on-line (to add several national to regional balances).
- To allow for correcting energy data gaps as well as to further improve data accuracy.
Broswer Compatibility Note: This application is compatible with most common internet browsers (i.e., Google Chrome, Firefox, Apple Safari, and Opera.) However, some compatibility issues were encountered with
Microsoft Internet Explorer and are currently being investigated. MED-EMIP recommends downloading and using one of the browsers listed.
Data Templates

MED-EMIP adopts the international standards set by
EuroSTAT for energy inputs, conversions, consumptions, and outputs, i.e., fuels and indicators. This includes almost all common fuels known to mankind on the commercial level, in addition to most common modes of energy conversion and consumption. Because not all these parameters apply to each country or even region, MED-EMIP recommends use of data input templates, with parameters customized to national or regional fuels and modes of consumption.
Existing data templates:
Data Sets

Use this tool to generate a blank Excel datasheet for easy creation of a new data set.
Select fuels and indicators you expect to use in the data set then press "1000 TOE" or "Native" to create Excel datasheet. If not sure, you can select "All" for both fuels and indicators to generate a complete blank template. This will not affect system resources.
About MED-EMIP's Online Energy Balance

The features offered by the MED-EMIP online energy balance tool are:
- Storing and comparing the national energy balances of MEDA program countries for different years in both quantitative units for each source of energy (tons, cubic meters etc.) and in unified energy units (e.g. TOE; Joules), keeping references to the conversion coefficients used.
- Providing a utility to upload the national energy balances data.
- Allow users to alter the provided data and save them for later use without affecting the countries’ official energy balances.
- Provide users with the capability to perform calculations based on individual country data or based on aggregate data for a group of countries, arbitrarily selectable by the user. Allow to add and to subtract several energy balance sheets (years, countries) to produce balance sheets for multi-year periods and regions, indicating developments and cross-country differences.
- Providing a section for displaying preset energy indicators in numerical and graphical representation based on the provided energy balances data.
- Providing administrative features to control the user provided balances allowing uploading such user-edited balance sheets to a public data base “user-provided data and scenarios” on the web portal.
